Beginning in 2019, Franklin County Public Health will be using Merus 3.0 which is a natural botanical pyrethrin, is Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) listed, and can be applied in and around organic gardens, farms and crops. The EPA defines pyrethrins as, “botanical insecticides derived from chrysanthemum flowers most commonly found in Australia and Africa.” There are no other additives or chemicals added to Merus 3.0.

Effective July 10, 2019, Franklin County Public Health will use Duet on a short-term basis to control the floodwater mosquitoes that have hatched following all the rain.  Duet uses sumithrin, a synthetic version of the active ingredient of Merus. Duet adds a synergist and an ingredient that causes resting mosquitoes to take flight, enabling increased efficacy.  Once we have better control of the mosquito population, we will switch back to using Merus 3.0.

Precautions You Can Take When We Do Spray

Check this website for notices

about adulticiding in your area. We will make all attempts to post our spray schedule and a map on our website of the spray areas 24 hours in advance of the application

Bring pets indoors

cover ornamental fish ponds during adulticiding hours to avoid direct exposure

Outdoor tables, furniture, toys

& play equipment can also be covered or rinsed off with water following the application, but this isn't necessary since this pesticide begins to degrade with exposure to air and light

Wash any exposed fruits

Remain indoors with the windows closed

when adulticiding is taking place (if possible). Typically, windows can be reopened within 30 minutes after our trucks have passed

If you come in direct contact

with pesticides, wash well any exposed skin surfaces with soap and water

Bring laundry inside

before adulticiding begins. If these items are exposed, they may be washed again in soap and water

Allow about one hour

to pass before allowing children play in areas that have been treated

For your safety and the safety of our spray truck operators:

  • Do not approach or walk up to a spray truck.
  • If you are walking and you see a spray truck approaching, please make yourself visible to the driver and begin walking in the direction the truck is heading. Spray truck drivers are trained to turn off the spray. Please note that the spray motor may still be running, but product will not be sprayed. The driver will let you take an alternative route before spraying.
  • If you are in your car, do not follow a spray truck when it is operating. If you are in a vehicle, raise the windows, turn on the air conditioning (on recirculation mode), wait for the truck to pass or find an alternate route.
